Vietnamese students rank top in Southeast Asia for math, reading, and writing

The Ministry of Education and Training, announcing the preliminary results on Saturday, said detailed results would come later this year.

Vietnam participated in the assessment along with Cambodia, Timor-Leste, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

The evaluation was conducted in 152 primary schools across 53 provinces and cities.

SEA-PLM is a learning assessment program conducted every five years, coordinated by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), UNICEF, and other international partners. Its goal is to help countries monitor student learning outcomes and strengthen education systems. Participation in the survey is voluntary.

Mục tiêu của nó là giúp các quốc gia theo dõi kết quả học tập của học sinh và củng cố hệ thống giáo dục. Việc tham gia khảo sát là tự nguyện.

Vietnam also topped all three subject areas in its first participation in the 2019 cycle, which included Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, and the Philippines. Vietnam then scored 341.55 in math, 336.46 in reading comprehension, and 328.01 in writing—well above the regional average of 300–304 points per subject.

• Việt Nam cũng đứng đầu cả ba lĩnh vực môn học trong lần tham gia đầu tiên vào chu kỳ năm 2019, bao gồm Campuchia, Lào, Malaysia, Myanmar và Philippines. Khi đó, Việt Nam đạt 341.55 điểm toán, 336.46 điểm đọc hiểu và 328.01 điểm viết—cao hơn nhiều so với mức trung bình khu vực là 300–304 điểm mỗi môn.

The ministry highlighted that SEA-PLM results in both 2019 and 2024 are consistent with Vietnam's strong performance in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) for 15-year-olds. In the latest 2022 PISA assessment, Vietnamese students ranked second in ASEAN in math, science, and reading, just behind Singapore.

Trong đánh giá PISA mới nhất năm 2022, học sinh Việt Nam xếp thứ hai trong ASEAN về toán, khoa học và đọc hiểu, chỉ sau Singapore.

According to the SEA-PLM website, the 2024 cycle plays a crucial role in the post-Covid-19 era by supporting learning recovery, measuring educational outcomes, and fostering regional exchange on education policy.

The ministry emphasized that Vietnam's participation in SEA-PLM helps provide an objective benchmark for assessing educational quality, guiding policy development, and improving learning outcomes across the country.
