Vietnamese rank 4th largest group of foreign students in Australia

According to data released Wednesday by Australia's Department of Education, the total number of enrolled international students reached 816,587 in the year to May, up 1% compared to the same period in 2024 and 18% higher than in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic.

More than half (57%) of these students came from five countries: China (23%), India (17.1%), Nepal (7.9%), Vietnam (4.6%), and the Philippines (4.5%).

The figures cover students in high schools, universities, colleges, vocational training programs, and short-term English courses lasting 6–9 months.

Higher education accounted for the largest share at 52.2%, followed by vocational education and training at 33.7%. Higher education also recorded the strongest growth in enrolments during the first five months of the year, rising 11%. Other sectors saw minor growth, except for English-language courses, which fell 37%, and vocational education and training, which remained unchanged.

In higher education, Management and Commerce was the most popular field of study, followed by Information Technology. In vocational training, Management and Commerce also topped the list, followed by Food, Hospitality, and Personal Services.

Over the past two years, Australia has tightened its international student policies to control immigration. Changes include reducing the post-graduation work period from 4–6 years to 2–4 years, raising the English-language requirement from an IELTS score of 6.0 to 6.5, and increasing both the financial proof threshold and visa application fees.

On Monday, the Australian government announced it would raise its foreign student cap by 9% to 295,000 next year, prioritizing applicants from Southeast Asia.
