Vietnam announces baseline for determining territorial waters width in Gulf of Tonkin

The Vietnamese Government issued on Friday a declaration establishing the baseline for measuring the breadth of Vietnam's territorial waters in the Gulf of Tonkin.
- Chính phủ Việt Nam đã ban hành tuyên bố vào thứ Sáu về việc thiết lập đường cơ sở để đo chiều rộng lãnh hải của Việt Nam ở Vịnh Bắc Bộ.
The declaration, announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, follows Resolution No. 68 dated Feb. 14, 2025 of the National Assembly Standing Committee.
- Tuyên bố này, được Bộ Ngoại giao công bố, dựa trên Nghị quyết số 68 ngày 14 tháng 2 năm 2025 của Ủy ban Thường vụ Quốc hội.
The establishment of the baseline in the Gulf of Tonkin aims to excercise Vietnam's rights and obligations under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and aligns with the 2012 Law of the Sea of Vietnam.
- Việc thiết lập đường cơ sở ở Vịnh Bắc Bộ nhằm thực hiện các quyền và nghĩa vụ của Việt Nam theo Công ước Liên Hợp Quốc về Luật Biển năm 1982 (UNCLOS) và phù hợp với Luật Biển Việt Nam năm 2012.
The baseline is determined in accordance with UNCLOS provisions, taking into account the Gulf of Tonkin's geographical and natural characteristics while ensuring compliance with international treaties that Vietnam is a party or member.
- Đường cơ sở được xác định theo các quy định của UNCLOS, tính đến các đặc điểm địa lý và tự nhiên của Vịnh Bắc Bộ đồng thời đảm bảo tuân thủ các hiệp ước quốc tế mà Việt Nam là thành viên hoặc bên tham gia.
It serves as a legal foundation for defining Vietnam's maritime boundaries and the extent of its maritime areas in line with the UNCLOS and the agreement on the delimitation of the Gulf of Tonkin between Vietnam and China signed in 2000. It provides a robust legal framework for protecting and excercising Vietnam's sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction, serving economic development and maritime management, and promoting international cooperation.
- Nó đóng vai trò là cơ sở pháp lý để xác định ranh giới biển của Việt Nam và phạm vi các vùng biển của Việt Nam theo UNCLOS và hiệp định phân định Vịnh Bắc Bộ giữa Việt Nam và Trung Quốc ký năm 2000. Nó cung cấp một khung pháp lý vững chắc để bảo vệ và thực hiện chủ quyền, quyền chủ quyền, và quyền tài phán của Việt Nam, phục vụ phát triển kinh tế và quản lý biển, và thúc đẩy hợp tác quốc tế.
