Thailand issues warning about 'zombie cigarettes' amid rising popularity in Bangkok

Thai authorities are urging teenagers to avoid "zombie cigarettes," which are laced with sedative drugs that can disrupt several bodily processes with long-term use.

Anukul Prueksanusak, deputy spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office, said that "zombie cigarettes," which contain the medical sedative etomidate, are becoming more popular in some entertainment districts in Bangkok. This trend persists despite the government's ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking, according to The Straits Times.

Etomidate can induce drowsiness, slow breathing and low blood pressure, with severe cases potentially leading to unconsciousness or death. Long-term use can also impair adrenal gland function and disrupt cortisol production, among other health risks, The Nation reported.
