Singapore remains Asia’s most peaceful country in 2025

Besides Singapore, only Japan (12th) and Malaysia (13th) rank among the top Asian nations in the Global Peace Index 2025 compiled by The Institute for Economics and Peace.

The city-state ranks 6th globally on the index, immediately followed by Portugal, Denmark, Slovenia and Finland.

When the ranking was first launched in 2008 Singapore occupied the 22nd spot.

The country scores highly in societal safety and security. It also reports low levels of ongoing domestic and international conflict.

But Singapore’s high militarization level, mostly to ensure the smooth passage of sea trade which is crucial to its economy, has held the country back from the highest tier of the ranking, the report said.
