Rice export set to surpass 8.2M tonnes

As the world’s largest rice importer, the Philippines bought 4.8 million tonnes from overseas last year, of which Vietnam supplied the lion’s share at 3.6 million tonnes.

In the first seven months of the year, Vietnam sold 5.5 million tonnes of the cereal abroad for US$2.81 billion, with the Philippines continuing to serve as its biggest buyer. However, revenue experienced a year-on-year fall of 13.5%.

• Trong bảy tháng đầu năm, Việt Nam đã bán 5,5 triệu tấn ngũ cốc ra nước ngoài với giá trị 2,81 tỷ USD, với Philippines vẫn là khách hàng lớn nhất. Tuy nhiên, doanh thu đã giảm 13,5% so với cùng kỳ năm ngoái.

Exporters admitted that while shipments to the country have slowed, they have signed new contracts at significantly improved prices and expanded their customer base across ASEAN and South African markets.

• Các nhà xuất khẩu thừa nhận rằng mặc dù các lô hàng đến nước này đã chậm lại, họ đã ký kết các hợp đồng mới với giá cả cải thiện đáng kể và mở rộng cơ sở khách hàng ở các thị trường ASEAN và Nam Phi.

Earlier this month, the Philippine government announced a two-month suspension of rice imports from Sep. 1 amidst falling domestic rice prices. However, market analysts predict that overall exports will remain robust thanks to growing demand in other regions.

• Đầu tháng này, chính phủ Philippines đã thông báo về việc tạm ngừng nhập khẩu gạo trong hai tháng từ ngày 1/9 trong bối cảnh giá gạo nội địa giảm. Tuy nhiên, các nhà phân tích thị trường dự đoán rằng xuất khẩu tổng thể sẽ vẫn mạnh mẽ nhờ vào nhu cầu tăng ở các khu vực khác.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) forecast Vietnam’s full-year rice exports at 8.2 million tonnes, up 300,000 tonnes as compared to the previous prediction. Shipments will increase in the end of the year, driven by high demands from Africa and China. Meanwhile, the Philippines’ rice import suspension is projected to trim the country’s purchases by 500,000 tonnes. Even so, the Philippines’ total imports in the year could remain at 4.9 million tonnes, the highest in the world.

• Bộ Nông nghiệp Hoa Kỳ (USDA) dự báo xuất khẩu gạo cả năm của Việt Nam đạt 8,2 triệu tấn, tăng 300.000 tấn so với dự đoán trước đó. Các lô hàng sẽ tăng vào cuối năm, được thúc đẩy bởi nhu cầu cao từ châu Phi và Trung Quốc. Trong khi đó, việc tạm ngừng nhập khẩu gạo của Philippines dự kiến sẽ giảm lượng mua của nước này xuống 500.000 tấn. Tuy nhiên, tổng nhập khẩu của Philippines trong năm có thể vẫn đạt 4,9 triệu tấn, cao nhất thế giới.

Chairman of the Vietnam Food Association Do Ha Nam expressed his confidence that with the robust results achieved in the seven-month span, Vietnam’s rice shipment will surpass 8 million tonnes this year. He noted that the country is firmly positioned as the world’s second-largest rice exporter due to its own brand identity and growing recognition in the international markets.

Ông lưu ý rằng quốc gia này đang vững chắc ở vị trí nhà xuất khẩu gạo lớn thứ hai thế giới nhờ vào thương hiệu riêng và sự nhận diện ngày càng tăng trên thị trường quốc tế.
