More US students seek to study abroad

The 2025 Study Abroad Survey by Terra Dotta, an edtech solutions provider, revealed that 76% of American college students said they hoped or planned to study abroad this year, a slight increase from the previous year’s 73%.

More than 90% said study abroad is important for their personal growth, according to the survey, which polled 275 students.

Australia, favored by just 5% of students last year, was the preferred choice of 35% of students this year, likely reflecting the country's full reopening after several years of pandemic restrictions, Terra Dotta's study abroad director, David Nelson, told The PIE News.

However, financial concerns remained the most significant barrier, with 80% citing cost as their primary worry, and nearly half of those not planning to study abroad pointing to affordability as the main reason.

Terra Dotta advised institutions to focus on communicating the value of studying abroad early in the student journey, with more than three-quarters of students saying they considered a school's study abroad program in their college decision.

The survey comes as U.S. universities face a well-documented domestic enrollment cliff, with government data showing undergraduate enrollment declined by more than two million between 2010 and 2022.

According to data released in June by Studyportals, a global platform that tracks real-time demand for higher education worldwide, interest in studying in the U.S. has dropped to its lowest level since the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, while the U.K. has emerged as the leading alternative for postgraduate education.

Between Jan. 5 and April 30, weekly pageviews for U.S. programs plunged by 50%, and the country lost 30% of its market share. Compared to its 2023 peak, the current share has been nearly cut in half.
