Indian businessman jailed in Singapore for stealing perfumes and bags at Changi Airport

Bhansali Hemant Mahendrakumar admitted in court that he swiped perfumes, make-up, bags and other goods valued at over S$5,100 (US$3,990) from at least 12 different shops across three airport terminals and Jewel within just eight hours. His spree took place between the evening of May 28 and the early hours of May 29, while he was waiting for a connecting flight to Qingdao, China, The Straits Times reported.

Among the stores targeted was a Guardian outlet in Terminal 3's departure transit hall, where he took $1,228 worth of cosmetics. Prosecutors said his actions were captured clearly on CCTV cameras inside the shops.

Mahendrakumar was not caught immediately. He managed to leave Singapore on his onward flight, but when he returned on June 1 while transiting from China to New Delhi, police arrested him. Officers also found nearly S$1,000 worth of other jewelry and beauty products in his possession, which he could not explain.

His lawyer, S. Balamurugan of Regal Law, said his client had been traveling frequently between India and China for business and had been suffering from severe depression. A psychiatrist at Novena Medical Center diagnosed him with major depressive disorder after his arrest. According to the defense, Mahendrakumar said he was deeply depressed and under the influence of alcohol at the time, and could not explain why he stole the items.

He also pointed to Mahendrakumar’s cooperation with police and his guilty plea in mitigation, Stomp reported.

On Sept. 15, the Singapore court sentenced him to four weeks in jail after he admitted to four counts of theft. Nine other theft charges and one charge of fraudulent possession of property were taken into consideration. Each theft charge carries a maximum penalty of seven years' imprisonment and a fine.
