Hanoi tightens airport health checks amid Congo mysterious disease outbreak

The move aims to early detect any cases of infection or suspicion in order to take appropriate and timely response measures.

Previously, on Dec. 12, the Department of Preventive Medicine under the Ministry of Health issued an urgent notice regarding cases of unknown disease in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) which were recorded by an infectious disease surveillance system on Dec. 10.

• Trước đó, vào ngày 12 tháng 12, Cục Y tế dự phòng thuộc Bộ Y tế đã ban hành thông báo khẩn cấp về các trường hợp mắc bệnh không rõ nguyên nhân tại Cộng hòa Dân chủ Congo (DRC) được ghi nhận bởi hệ thống giám sát bệnh truyền nhiễm vào ngày 10 tháng 12.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), from Oct. 24 to Dec. 5, 2024, the Panzi health zone in Kwango province of the DRC reported 416 cases of unknown disease, with 31 fatalities marking a mortality rate of 7.6%. The disease’s symptoms include fever, headache, cough, runny nose, and muscle pain. Most cases are in children (53% of cases and 54.8% of deaths are under 5 years old). All severe cases were found to be severely malnourished.

• Theo Tổ chức Y tế Thế giới (WHO), từ ngày 24 tháng 10 đến ngày 5 tháng 12 năm 2024, khu vực y tế Panzi ở tỉnh Kwango của DRC đã báo cáo 416 trường hợp mắc bệnh không rõ nguyên nhân, với 31 ca tử vong, đạt tỷ lệ tử vong 7,6%. Các triệu chứng của bệnh bao gồm sốt, đau đầu, ho, sổ mũi và đau cơ. Phần lớn các trường hợp là trẻ em (53% các ca và 54,8% ca tử vong dưới 5 tuổi). Tất cả các trường hợp nặng đều được phát hiện là suy dinh dưỡng nghiêm trọng.

Some countries in Asia and Southeast Asia also assess the risk of disease transmission from the DRC as low, given the very few travelers from that region and the absence of direct flights from the DRC.

• Một số quốc gia ở châu Á và Đông Nam Á cũng đánh giá nguy cơ lây truyền bệnh từ DRC là thấp, do số lượng du khách từ khu vực này rất ít và không có chuyến bay trực tiếp từ DRC.

WHO has supported the DRC in deploying rapid response teams, managing cases, collecting samples for pathogen testing, and conducting prevention and control activities in the outbreak areas. As of December 10, updated information from WHO indicated that 10 out of 12 initial test samples were positive for malaria.

• WHO đã hỗ trợ DRC triển khai các đội phản ứng nhanh, quản lý các trường hợp, thu thập mẫu để kiểm tra mầm bệnh và thực hiện các hoạt động phòng chống và kiểm soát dịch bệnh tại các khu vực bùng phát. Tính đến ngày 10 tháng 12, thông tin cập nhật từ WHO cho thấy 10 trong số 12 mẫu thử ban đầu dương tính với bệnh sốt rét.

Vietnam’s Department of Preventive Medicine has closely followed the developments of the disease outbreak in the DRC. It’s also coordinating with WHO and countries' related agencies to update and share information about the disease. In case of new developments, the department will collaborate with WHO and relevant units to assess risks and propose appropriate response measures, including strengthening health quarantine.

• Cục Y tế Dự phòng Việt Nam đã theo sát các diễn biến của dịch bệnh bùng phát tại DRC. Cục cũng phối hợp với WHO và các cơ quan liên quan của các quốc gia để cập nhật và chia sẻ thông tin về dịch bệnh. Trong trường hợp có diễn biến mới, cục sẽ hợp tác với WHO và các đơn vị liên quan để đánh giá rủi ro và đề xuất các biện pháp ứng phó phù hợp, bao gồm việc tăng cường kiểm dịch y tế.
