Free Vietnamese language class, backed by Columbia University, launched in New York

The class is jointly organized by the Vietnamese Permanent Mission to the United Nations and the Vietnamese Language Programme at Columbia University. The learners are children aged 6 to 14, most of whom were born in the U.S.

• Lớp học được tổ chức chung bởi Phái đoàn Thường trực Việt Nam tại Liên Hợp Quốc và Chương trình Tiếng Việt tại Đại học Columbia. Học viên là các em từ 6 đến 14 tuổi, phần lớn sinh ra tại Mỹ.

Speaking at the opening ceremony on March 22, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Vietnamese Permanent Mission to the UN, highlighted the importance of preserving and promoting the Vietnamese language abroad, particularly in the U.S. He expressed his belief that such classes would be engaging and filled with laughter, following a "learning through play" approach. Beyond improving their Vietnamese language skills, the children will also have the opportunity to explore Vietnam’s cultural traditions and history, fostering a stronger connection to their homeland, he added.

• Phát biểu tại lễ khai giảng vào ngày 22 tháng 3, Đại sứ Đặng Hoàng Giang, Trưởng Phái đoàn Thường trực Việt Nam tại Liên Hợp Quốc, nhấn mạnh tầm quan trọng của việc bảo tồn và phát huy tiếng Việt ở nước ngoài, đặc biệt là tại Mỹ. Ông bày tỏ tin tưởng rằng các lớp học như vậy sẽ thú vị và tràn đầy tiếng cười, theo phương pháp "học mà chơi". Ngoài việc nâng cao kỹ năng tiếng Việt, các em còn có cơ hội khám phá truyền thống văn hóa và lịch sử của Việt Nam, từ đó tạo sự kết nối mạnh mẽ hơn với quê hương, ông cho biết.

On this occasion, Ambassador Giang expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the enthusiastic support and collaboration of the Vietnamese Language Programme at Columbia University. He extended special thanks to close friends of the mission, including Professor Nguyen Lien Hang, Director of the Weatherhead East Asia Institute, and Lecturer Nguyen Phuong Chung from Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures of Columbia University.

• Nhân dịp này, Đại sứ Giang bày tỏ lòng cảm kích sâu sắc đối với sự hỗ trợ nhiệt tình và hợp tác của Chương trình Tiếng Việt tại Đại học Columbia. Ông gửi lời cảm ơn đặc biệt tới những người bạn thân thiết của phái đoàn, bao gồm Giáo sư Nguyễn Liên Hằng, Giám đốc Viện Đông Á Weatherhead, và Giảng viên Nguyễn Phương Chung từ Khoa Ngôn ngữ và Văn hóa Đông Á của Đại học Columbia.

Professor Hang shared her honor in working alongside Vietnam’s diplomatic mission to preserve Vietnamese language and culture in the U.S. She expressed hope that the joint initiatives would be successful, inspiring further efforts to teach and learn Vietnamese in New York.

In addition to this Vietnamese language programme, the spouses of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN continue to organize regular Vietnamese language and cultural classes for the children of Vietnamese diplomats in New York. These activities serve as meaningful contributions to the celebration of "Day for honoring Vietnamese language abroad" (Sept. 8) and align with the contest "Searching for Ambassadors of Vietnamese abroad 2025", launched by the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

• Ngoài chương trình tiếng Việt này, phu nhân các cán bộ Phái đoàn Thường trực Việt Nam tại Liên Hợp Quốc tiếp tục tổ chức các lớp học tiếng Việt và văn hóa thường xuyên cho con em các nhà ngoại giao Việt Nam tại New York. Các hoạt động này đóng góp ý nghĩa vào việc kỷ niệm "Ngày tôn vinh tiếng Việt ở nước ngoài" (ngày 8 tháng 9) và phù hợp với cuộc thi "Tìm kiếm Đại sứ tiếng Việt ở nước ngoài 2025", do Ủy ban Nhà nước về Người Việt Nam ở nước ngoài thuộc Bộ Ngoại giao tổ chức.
